Treadwell’s Travels, Destination: Vero Beach and The Kilted Mermaid

The Kilted Mermaid is a favorite stop when in Vero Beach, Florida. The location on Old Dixie Highway has been several of my favorite spots especially when it was Cafe Mojo, a Fabulous coffee shop. This particular night was ‘DragO’ (Drag Bingo) featuring Kelli Rendell whom was not only pulling the numbers (bingo), but also doing her Fabulous Drag show in between bingo rounds. I knew it was a popular venue, so I wanted to get there early enough to claim my ‘real estate’ at the bar, in order to have the best view of the stage. Upon arrival, I was surprised that it was packed over an hour prior to show time. Finding the perfect seat at the bar and settling in, Kilted Mermaid owner Linda Moore, came over to welcome me back. What a Fabulous memory, as I had not been there for nearly 2 years. The ability to quickly recognize and welcome previous customers from several years back? Now that’s how to build a business! Fabulous service indeed.

I decided to try the Cheese Fondue and was not disappointed. Creamy cheese with pesto drizzled over the top with crispy bread and veggies for dipping. What a treat to have fondue in a bar setting made it even more Fabulous. Still feeling like I wanted to experience more, I ordered a Chicken Enchilada in Puff Pastry. I was glad I tried this crispy, delicious, updated presentation of a classic enchilada. Bountiful chicken in a creamy sauce encased in flakey puff pastry.

For dessert, I could not turn down the opportunity to try Peanut Butter and Chocolate Fondue. The creamy decadent sauce with a lavish assortment of dipping goodies was Fabulous. The Kilted Mermaid offers one of the best beer and wine selections of any of my travels thus far. During this visit, I tried a Double IPA, that was bitter enough and strong enough to cut through the richness of the food selections.

The Kilted Mermaid is already at the top of my list to visit again, on future trips to Vero Beach.

A Pilot, A Volcano, The Wardrobe.

vuitton-icons-jturrell

“The son of a French aeronautical engineer who emigrated to the United States, James Turrell has an unfailing passion for the airplane built by his father. Today, Turrell flies the plane, which is called the Harlow, himself. As its pilot he conquered the American West by air, hunting out a site on which to establish his studio. In 1974 he took residence in an extinct volcano-the Roden Crater-which was about to house a very different form of activity.

Having focusd his work on the study of light, Turrell envisioned a remarkable traveling trunk. When it opened, it emits a brilliant beam of 3-D llight, which reacts to the surrounding radiance and which the spectator, having unfolded the Wardrobe’s built-in seat, can observe at his leisure.”

The Goose has a rival, and it’s not Grey

For full discloser, I am a Grey Goose Vodka fan and Grey Goose on the rocks and (my local bartenders please take note) with no fruit, is my go-to drink. Grey Goose was invented in 1996 by Sidney Frank who sold it to Bacardi in 2004. The Mitre de Chai Grey Goose is Francois Thibault, who developed the original recipe for Vodka in Cognac France. The premium version of Grey Goose has a touch of young cognac for a hint of excellence. I am sure my signature drink will remain Grey Goose on the rocks although I have found some competition.

While walking through my local grocery store, I spot a Vodka that I had not seen before. NUE Vodka bottled in Dallas Texas and made from grain. Always willing to try something new to get me out of my comfort zone, and this was no exception. I thought if it was not suitable for an ‘on the rocks’ pour, it could be used as a mixer at our next party. I was pleasantly surprise that it’s 6x times filtration created a Fabulous Vodka. Grey professes to need only 1 filtration because, as they say, if you use the best ingredients you do not have to filter more than once. Also pleasantly surprised by the cost of NUE Vodka being more competitively priced than Grey Goose.

I will do a blind taste test at some point and see if I can tell the difference, as I believe I can with other Vodkas, even if it is premium.

Let’s Get Cheesy

As a self professed cheese snob, and always presenting cheese boards for guest during Fabulous gatherings, I am always looking for a new find. Walking through my local grocery store, not a cheese monger in site, I spot a cheese I had not seen before. English Farmhouse Extra mature Cheddar by Somerset Farm in Somerset England.

I could not resist with the excitement of a new cheese; I had to try it the night I brought it home and it did not disappoint. I lean toward firm cheese with the creamy rich cheese as a compliment to the board rather than the main presentation.

The cheese was dry and firm because of the aging and that I like very much as I believe it concentrates the flavor intensity. I like a firm, crumbly texture for mouth feel combined with intense flavor, this is a perfect pairing for a rich, California Cabernet, and we will talk about that in another blog. The cheese is wrapped in traditional cheese paper making it appear that the selection was made in it’s home country. If you do not have cheese paper to store your cheese leftovers, purchase some and you will end your cheese mold problems that you have with plastic wrap. If you have not tried cheese as your “dessert”, give it a try

Cheese is the perfect end to a perfect meal without spike and down of a sugary offering and has more protein. Do not wait for guest to create a Fabulous cheese board.

Let me help you with your next party!

Oscars 2017

MERYL STREEP in Elie Saab Couture, Fred Leighton jewelry, Cutler and Gross eyeglasses, and a Charlotte Olympia clutch looked Fabulous in a matronly manner. Not a beautiful women, although she could look better in a more youthful gown.

RYAN GOSLING in Gucci with Christian Louboutin shoes look Fabulous but why did he go to the *thrift store* to find a ruffled shirt??? There is a reason the ruffled shirt went away and unfortunately Ryan did not get the memo.

CHARLIZE THERON in Dior and  Chopard jewelry looked like a mistake, as I am sure she must have dressed in the dark and did not see what she looked like? Most of time she looks Fabulous, but the top of this dress looked like it had to much fabric making her look oddly ugly.

NAOMIE HARRIS in Calvin Klein Collection looked less than Oscar worthy. This would have been a Fabulous interpretation of innovation at a lesser award show but not for the Oscars.

DAKOTA JOHNSON in Gucci looked like a joke. A big fan and neckline channeling Greta Garbo and (Greta) is turning over in her grave, as even she would say no way!

NICOLE KIDMAN in Armani Privé and a vintage Omega timepiece looked Fabulous although predictable. So many time she wears the color of her skin looking Fabulous but predictable. At least the last award show she wore green Gucci with the birds on the shoulder and surprised us all that she does see in colors other than nude.

VIOLA DAVIS in Armani Privé with a Bally clutch looked Fabulous. The color against her skin was stunning although her carrying the bottom half of her dress up the steps to the stage and continuing to carry her dress looked awkward and said the dress was more trouble than it was worth.

EMMA STONE in Givenchy Haute Couture and Tiffany & Co. jewelry looked Fabulous and one of my favorites for the evening. I wish the dress had more color to give contrast from her skin and not so monotone.

HALLE BERRY in Imagine and Vince Camuto shoes looked like she was in a rush. The normally Fabulous fashionista did not have time to do her hair, bless her heart, and must have gotten confused with all the ties and strapping on this gown.

JANELLE MONAE in Elie Saab Haute Couture looked like a Fabulous little tea pot, just missing the handle and spout.

OCTAVIA SPENCER in Marchesa looked Fabulous although not the best choice for her figure. I do not think she needed to add additional width to her figure with feathers. Something skimming her curves could have been more complimentary.

ESSICA BIEL AND JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE looked Fabulous. Biel in Kaufmanfranco, a 2 million dollar Tiffany & Co. necklace and Timberlake in Tom Ford and Christian Louboutin shoes. They exemplified the Ken and Barbie perfection.

TARAJI P. HENSON in Alberto Ferretti looked Fabulous. I believe this is her best look so far although a little less shadowing around her boobs as they are bodacious on their own and need little enhancement.

EMMA ROBERTS in Armani Privé looked Fabulous and must have been proud to announce she is president of the iddy bitty titty committee. I do hope she grows more stylist like her aunt Julia.

HAILEE STEINFELD in Ralph & Russo haute couture looked Fabulous. Another of the best looks for the evening. Who knew you could put ruffles in so many different places and still look Fabulous?

FELICITY JONES in Dior with Christian Louboutin shoes looked less than Fabulous in a wide way. Why would you wear tea length to the Oscars and why would you wear tea length if you looked so short and wide?

As always, I’ll be watching . . .

Golden Globes, 2017

Golden Globes, 2017

The Fabulous . . .

Emma Stone – wearing a Fabulous Valentino dress, Tiffany & Co. jewels, and Jimmy Choo shoes, looked ethereal.

Reese Witherspoon – wearing a Fabulous yellow Versace dress, with Christian Louboutin shoes, and Tiffany & Co. jewels, definitely got the memo to wear yellow.

Ruth Nega – wearing a Fabulous Louis Vuitton dress custom for her, as well as completely on trend, with every color of metallic used, except aluminum foil (?) Her dress also featured a Fred Leighton cuff, featuring responsibly sourced Gemfields rubies.

Priyanka Chopra, wearing wearing a Fabulous gilded and on trend metallic, Ralph Lauren gown, with yet another trend, a plunging neckline. She also wore Brian Atwood shoes, Lorraine Schwartz jewels.

Blake Lively – wearing a Fabulous Atelier Versace gown with pockets, again Lorraine Schwartz jewels. She chose two trends: A deep V and metallic. She looked absolutely Fabulous – especially after giving birth!

Hailee Seinfeld – wearing a Fabulous Vera Wang dress with cold shoulders, another strong trend for the evening. Stuart Weitzman heels, and Forevermark jewels completed her Fabulous ensemble.

Natalie Portman – paying homage to the Fabulous Jackie Kennedy’s – Oleg Cassini inauguration gown, and on trend for the evening in an embellished Prada dress. Although I would have raised the embellishment to an empire waist, Jimmy Choo shoes, and Tiffany & Co. jewels (her bracelet was from 1910!)

Mandy More – wearing a Fabulous Naeem Khan dress (although, are we not tired of this same dress reinvented, over and over in different colors and fabrics?) Jewels by Neil Lane completed the look.

Kerry Washington – wearing a Fabulous Dolce & Gabbana dress, on trend metallic, although over embellished and a bit too short, with Sophia Webster heels, and Niwaka jewels.

Kristen Bell – wearing a Fabulous and on trend, low cut, Jenny Packham dress, and Jimmy Choo clutch. The best part of the outfit, were the more than 115 carats of Harry Winston diamonds.

Lily Collins – wearing a Fabulous Zuhair Murad Couture princess dress, that would have been perfect for a Disney film, vintage Harry Winston diamonds, and Salvatore Ferragamo shoes.

Emily Ratajkowski – wearing a Fabulous gold, and on trend color, with metallic cut-out Reem Acra gown with a dramatic slit. Stuart Weitzman heels, and H. Stern 18kt gold earrings completed the look. Her spastic actions on the red carpet gave thought that she might have been on more than just aspirin?

Sarah Jessica Parker – wearing a Fabulous Vera Wang bridal gown, with on trend cold shoulder, that conjured up images of Carrie Bradshaw’s wedding dress. The outfit was paired with Fred Leighton jewels, and her very own SJP Collection shoes.

Sofia Vergara – wearing a Fabulous Zuhair Murad on trend, Couture dress, with Lorraine Schwartz jewels. Sofia finally found a new way to show off the ‘girls’ in all their glory.

Viola Davis – wearing a Fabulous and on trend, yellow Michael Kors Collection, one shoulder dress, Stuart Weitzman shoes, and more than 90 carats of Harry Winston diamonds, which were the best part of her outfit.

Naomi Cambell – wearing a Fabulous Versace gown. Though Enough said, for this less than likable diva.

Carrie Underwood – wearing an avant-garde pink dress, that looked liked a Fabulous Georgia O’Keef painting, Yoko London pearl diamond earrings and ring, and Giuseppe Zanotti shoes.

Goldie Hawn – wearing a Fabulous of-the-shoulder Prabal Gurung dress, with Salvatore Ferragamo shoes and Lorraine Schwartz jewels. I didn’t know which was pulled tighter? Her face? Or, her body with spanks?

The Not-So Fabulous . . .

Michelle Williams – wearing a less than Fabulous Louis Vuitton dress, with a bow-choke. I guess Michelle could not get a jewelry house to loan her anything to wear? Oh well, maybe next year.

Amy Adams – wearing a boringly basic, Tom Ford dress (a better designer than a director), Cartier jewels, and Jimmy Choo shoes.

Felicity Jones – wearing a less than Fabulous Gucci gown, that could not have been uglier if it tried, and Chanel Fine Jewelry earrings.

Zoe Saldana – wearing a less than Fabulous Gucci gown, that again did not work on many levels (it was a bad fashion night for Gucci).  Jimmy Choo shoes and Bulgari jewels, completed this not so Fabulous look.

Janelle Monáe – wearing a Fabulous Armani dress, however the asymmetrical made me wonder if it was long? Short? Black? White? Or was all of it on purpose? Giuseppe Zanetti heels, and Forevermark jewels completed this not so Fabulous look.

Anna Kendrick – wearing a one-shoulder, less than Fabulous Vionnet gown, with a floor-sweeping train, that could not have been less flattering.  Tyler Ellis clutch, and Neil Lane jewels.

Riley Keough – wearing a less than Fabulous Chanel Hauté Couture, beaded dress, with way too much going on, and none of them Fabulous. Chanel Fine Jewelry completed this less than Fabulous look.

Anna Chlumsky – (her look good have easily been labeled ‘clumsy’), wearing a less than Fabulous kelly-green gown, that was ill-fit, with a black star that looked like they ran out of material. Loeffler Randall sandals, and H. Stern 18kt gold hoops, completed this not-so Fabulous look.

Chrissy Metez – wearing a velvet embroidered dress, by Nathaniel Paul. Size has nothing to do with beauty, and this look proved that. This was a matron dress that should have been donated.

Octavia Spencer – Though a Fabulous actress, she wore a Laura Basci navy suit, that looked more like she was headed to the office, rather than to the the Globes.  A Tyler Ellis clutch, and Lorraine Schwartz jewels, completed the look.

Judith Light – wearing a Fabulous zebra strip, long sleeved gown, yet trying just a bit to hard, with Chopard jewels.

Sophie Turner – wearing a less than Fabulous Louis Vuitton gown, with sheer panels that made me ask “Why?” Forevermark jewels completed this not-so Fabulous look.

Fabulous, Or Not? . . .

Nicole Kidman – wearing a Fabulous Alexander McQueen dress (although too many of the trends that evening were represented in this one garment), with Fred Leighton jewels Stuart Weitzman shoes.

Tracee Ellis Ross – The oldest daughter of – “That’s Miss Ross, to you” wearing a Fabulous strapless, embellished Zuhair Murad dress (it was a good night for Zuhair Murad), and pumps and rows of rings, by Noudar, L’Dezen by Payal Shaw, Yeprem, Kavant & Sharat, and Hueb. (That was a more than Fabulous mouth-full). Tracee’s artistic display on her hands was Fabulous, while her dress was too tight, and too short. So close to Fabulous, and yet so far away.

Until next time . . .

Red Carpet Through The Years: The Fabulous Ones

Helen Mirren – Always A Class Act

Of the many Nominees whom have strolled the Red Carpet during the last 20 years, few have exhibited the grace and style as that of Helen Mirren.

Helen Mirren is one of Hollywood’s most respected actresses and her career internationally spans stage, screen and television. She’s won many awards for her powerful and versatile performances, including an Academy Award for her role in 2007’s – “The Queen”. Her appearances have continued to set the bar very high for her Hollywood counterparts, by arriving  on The Red Carpet looking elegant, graceful and stylish. In addition, her acceptance speeches are genuine and gracious.

Helen Mirren is definitely a Class Act and she remains at the top of my list of Hollywood’s Most Fabulously Dressed.

2016 Golden Globes

GlobeReview

The Fabulous  –

Helen Mirren showcased her Fabulous physique in a black gown by Badgley Mischka which had a plunging sweetheart neckline with a mesh section. She is 70 and Fabulous, looking classy and appropriate. The necklace, the hair, and the smile were the perfect compliments to the best dressed of the night!

Jennifer Lawrence looked red hot and Fabulous in a red silk crepe gown with cutout details by Dior Haute Couture. This is how you do peek-a-boo and still look Fabulous.

Laverne Cox (“Orange Is The New Black”) looked Fabulous in an backless ivory dress with a fishtail train by Elizabeth Kennedy. Though my favorite color, I am so glad she did not actually wear orange on the Red Carpet.

Viola Davis twinkled in a Fabulous tulle ball gown with a plunging illusion neckline and cape flutter sleeves. She now looks like Hollywood and Fabulous.

Lady Gaga went for Fabulous Old Hollywood glamour in this Atelier Versace dress with an exaggerated hourglass silhouette. It did not appear she could breath in the gown. It is not about how you feel; it is about how you look and she looked Fabulous!

And those who Dressed In The Dark –

Jennifer Lopez in her marigold Giambattisa Valli dress, complete with a cape, Jimmy Choo shoes and 200 carats of diamond baubles looked like a squeeze bottle of mustard. This was not a good look for her as everything was yellow, her skin, her hair, and her dress. The jewelry was Fabulous and I am surprised she did not request the diamonds be canary, although glad she did not, to complete her look of yellow.

Rachel Bloom worked her Fabulous curves in a Christian Siriano dress, paired with Christian Louboutin shoes, a Salvatore Ferragamo bag and H. Stern jewelry. She tried, bless her heart, but needed to pull the dress up and put on another pair of Spanx or let a seam out.

Rooney Mara wore a Fabulously (?) distressed, blush gown by Alexander McQueen, paired with Fred Leighton diamonds and Jimmy Choo shoes. I do not know what happened but it appears she got her dress caught in a shredder.

Melissa McCarthy in a self-designed metallic dress with too much shine that highlighted her hourglass shape and her weight loss. A statement pendant, lace booties and an embellished clutch could not make this Fabulous. Next time leave it to the designers.

Julianne Moore glistened in a sequin, midnight blue Tom Ford dress with velvet borders, teamed with Chopard jewelry. She looked Fabulous although appeared mature and possibly chocking in her gown.

Queen Latifah tried in a mint dress with an embellished neckline, a collaborative piece from her own collection. She is not the best person to wear her collection, if this is an example. She did not appear comfortable and would have liked to be in her flannel plaid and doc martins to be Fabulous.

Jane Fonda arrived in a white, long-sleeve Yves Saint Laurent Couture by Hedi Slimane dress with a dramatically ruffled neckline. She looks Fabulous at her age or any age. It is a shame she decided to put her bed skirt around her neck thinking it would be Fabulous and it was not.

Cate Blanchett fringed and Fabulous, wowed in a blush Givenchy Haute Couture by Ricardo Tisci gown with semisheer embroidered panels adding Tiffany & Co. jewels. The gown would have been more Fabulously appropriate when she aged gracefully into her 80s.

Maggie Gyllenhaal wore a yellow and black lace Marc Jacobs gown with floral appliqués that would have been Fabulous for a couch, a chair, or a foot stool.

Kate Hudson flaunted her incredible body in a sparkling peach Michael Kors choker, bra top and skirt, adding Giuseppe Zanotti platforms. If you saw the back of the dress, she would have looked Fabulous if she had only worn it backwards.

Amy Schumer tried to look Fabulous in Prabal Gurung’s two-tone, off-the-shoulder silk faille high-low gown and missed. She looked short, wide and odd.

America Ferrera walked the carpet in a Fabulous canary-yellow Jenny Packham dress, paired with gold accessories and looked older than her years.

Alicia Vikander in a white mousseline Louis Vuitton dress with a crisscross back, teamed with shoes and jewelry by the same French fashion house. She tried to looked Fabulous and missed with a look of a machine wash and tumble dry summer frock.

Eva Longoria tried out bridal white in a George Hobeika dress with intricate beading, an open back and bow details that looked like her very own craft project that went too far with the bow top, belt, and beading from Michaels. If all of her handy work were removed, she would have been closer to Fabulous.

Jaimie Alexander took the plunge in a black Genny dress with green geometric details (and pockets!). She looked like Fabulous left over Christmas wrappings. She was able to rock Fabulous emerald earrings.
